Planning for Real is an eye catching, hands on method which people use to sort out what needs to be done to improve their neighbourhood.A large map or 3-D
model of the community is made by the community themselves. This can be done either by local groups, e.g. youth groups, community groups, the steering group or by the children at the local school. The model is then used
at an open meeting to suit the needs of the local people.
Participants put suggestions for the community on cards, or labels, which can be placed at appropriate places on the map or model. Sometimes local service
providers, or representatives of the planning authority will attend to explain things they have already committed to, which may restrict development. For instance planning may have earmarked a piece of land for a local school
but local residents may want it somewhere else. This doesn't mean that the local community can't lobby against it. The community will be aware of restrictions and can make informed choices faced with the facts of
the situation and there are no illusions.
The advantages of Planning for Real are that it is a very visual technique and allows participants to show or visually demonstrate their needs. It is also anonymous and ideas do not
get attached to personalities. It avoids language and articulation difficulties and provides a means for all ages to have a say, including people who would not normally go to public meetings. Compromise and
consensus become easier because the "playing field" is the model or the map itself, not issues taken up by one person. Therefore, personalities don't emerge.
Large numbers of people can become involved and it can become a
social occasion. We hope to serve refreshments and provide seating at our own events in Walford and Bishopswood Village Halls so that participants can truly come along, meet others and enjoy a good chat about a whole range of
things that go on in the neighbourhood.
